IRENA BERTI - Don’t Look At Me That Way

Don't look at me with reproach in your eyes Don't look, don't look at me that way Don't look at me with reproach in your eyes Don't look, don't look at me that way I hold no contempt for you, none that I hide But I love how your gaze softly lingers And the meek little cunning you wear like a veil Yes, you seem to me fallen and stretched on the ground And I'll gladly admit what I'm seeing Like a fox playing dead in the snow Luring crows into reach with her scheming Well, so what — lure away, I won't flinch Only watch that your fire doesn't fade For my long-cooled and hollow-out soul Has been snagged by that trap many times, unafraid It's not you that I love, darling, not you Not you, not you that I love You're an echo, a shadow, a ghost of a face Through your eyes I see someone I'm dreaming of Someone I'm dreaming of Someone I'm dreaming of She has eyes like the pale summer sky And she may not appear to be tender Her face is cool and distant, it's true But she walked through me — proud, in full splendour And she shook something deep in my soul That kind — you don't fool her, don't cloud her — she sees You don't want to give in — and then do But you — can't even reach to the heart With your honeyed and affection-soaked lie Your lie Through your face I see someone I'm dreaming of Someone Someone I'm dreaming of And yet, though I look at you cold, I confess Something hidden, and strange, and forever If there were no hell and no heaven to dread Man would still have invented them both, one way or another Through your face I see someone I'm dreaming of Someone Someone I'm dreaming of Don't look at me with reproach in your eyes I hold no contempt — none that I hide Don't look at me with reproach in your eyes I hold no contempt — none that I hide
